In 1906 Michelangelo Fontanella [grandfather] founded the original “Gelateria Pasticceria” in Conegliano (Prosecco area near Venice).
In 1931 Michelangelo’s son Mario migrates to Germany and two years later opens the first Gelateria (Ice Cream Parlor) on the “Planken” Boulevard in the city of Mannheim.
Mario deliberately chose this region known for its mild climate and proximity to vineyards, steeped in history and elegance, not dissimilar to his home country of Italy.
Italy’s important traditions along with Germany’s penchant for precision shape Mario’s and spouse Renate’s [four] children’s upbringing.
In 1977 Mario’s son Dario began working in the family business and in 1985 he took over sole proprietorship from his parents. Driven by the same passions his father had shown, Dario set out to work with great enthusiasm to continue the old tradition of “Gelato artigianale” as well as to bring about new ideas.
In 2006 Dario was able to realize another exclusive project.
“Gelato Manufactory” opened that year with its unique architectural design of having the manufacturing floor of the ice making routine and the adjoining Café Aperto being separated only by an entirely glassed wall. Now the guests at the Café could witness through their own eyes the process of the creations by the “Maestri Gelatai”.
Cleanliness and hygiene have always been of utmost importance to us. At our Gelato manufactory it is the principle standard and strictly adhered to passion of our trade.
Through continued innovation of technical facilities, working materials and accessories, we have achieved the highest level of quality and health safety in our manufacturing process.
We carefully select each raw material and ingredient from suppliers that meet the same strict standards as our practice and philosophy.
